Speaking to Greek lobbying group, congressmen denounce presence of Turkish troops on Cyprus (short article suggested by Dünya).
House Foreign Relations Committee Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen yesterday called for Turkish troops to be withdrawn from Cyprus.
Ros-Lehtinen also called for Ankara to give full support to Cypriot peace negotiations, saying, “Cypriot leaders should be able to negotiate conditions for reunification of the island without backdoor pressure from Ankara.”
Also speaking at the meeting on the so-called “illegal occupation” of Cyprus, Representatives Gus Bilirakis (Florida), Carolyn Maloney (New York) and Frank Pallone (New Jersey) also argued that Turkish troops should be withdrawn from the island.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen should know at first that it is the Greek and Greek Cypriot Church that don’t support the reunification of Cyprus and do represent a big problem (according to an article of ABhaber today, a Greek Cypriot religious leader objects to the help of the Turkish Cypriots about the energy needs of the Greek Cypriots. Why do the Greek religious leaders always make political statements? No reaction from the EU about that. Amazing.).
Secondly, if the Annan peace plan for the reunification of Cyprus was acccepted by the Greek Cypriots in 2004, the Turkish troops in Northern Cyprus would already have been back in Turkey.
Doesn’t she know that the Greek Cypriots voted “No” to that – EU-UN – Annan peace plan?
Whereas the Turkish Cypriots voted “Yes” to that peace plan. Why? Because Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat supported the peace in Cyprus. Yes, that’s why the Turkish Cypriots approved the reunification of the island and accepted that the Turkish soldiers had to leave Northern Cyprus. That was a great and historic step (the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot nationalists were against that and tried to brainwash the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot citizens but they did not succeed) but the Greek Cypriots rejected that plan.
But today, the Greek and Greek Cypriot politicians and their dark lobbies within the EU and the USA make an amazing and appalling brainwashing about the Cypriot situation which the Greek side decided not to change in 2004.
Who is fooling whom?
The EU citizens ought to be aware of that unhealthy Cypriot situation and start supporting at last the Turkish Cypriots who are isolated and victims of a big injustice.
The Turkish Cypriots are the victims of the rulers of Shawshank (Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration, Germany, Austria and France).
Patience. If the Greek side persists in sabotaging the reunification of the island, the Turkish Cypriots will officially be recognized by several countries. They will not be isolated anymore. They will breathe at last.
PS. Here is an article of EurActiv UK that I commented a few days ago. Someone targeted me personally as you will see (that kind of attack is very usual on the Hurriyet Daily News. I’m glad not to be there anymore trying to post comments in a sea infested with anti-Turkey sharks!).
Igor’s comment is very interesting.cem
